What to know

Set in a verdant basin at the confluence of several valleys, in the heart of the Monti Sibillini, Visso is an ancient village that was for centuries a flourishing and autonomous mountain centre. Capital of a territory proud of its own independence, it prospered thanks to sheep-farming, to trade along the Apennine routes and to the working of wool, which fuelled its wealth and prestige. The historic centre, of medieval layout, stands out for the elegance of its stone palaces, churches and squares, testimony to a rich and refined past, when the community was governed by statutes and jealously defended liberties. Surrounded by spires and ridges, the village rises along ancient transhumance routes that connected the high pastures to the valleys below, marking the landscape with sheep-pens, drinking troughs and trails still walkable today. Visso long preserved precious autograph manuscripts of Giacomo Leopardi. Severely struck by the earthquake of 2016, it is today engaged in a long path of reconstruction, which has erased neither its charm nor its dignity. Historic seat of the Monti Sibillini National Park and awarded the Orange Flag of the Touring Club, Visso remains a privileged gateway to a territory of mountains, valleys and unspoilt nature of extraordinary beauty, where the relationship between man and the mountain environment has been handed down from generation to generation, among faith, the work of the fields and ancient trades guarded with pride by the local people.

What to see

The heart of the village is the scenic Piazza dei Martiri Vissani, onto which face the Collegiata di Santa Maria and the elegant stone palaces, witnesses to the community's prosperous past. Worth seeing are the churches rich in art, the carved portals and the village museums, among them the one that preserved the precious Leopardi manuscripts. Strolling among the alleys one comes upon fountains, coats of arms and compact views that recount centuries of mountain life, while the pale stone facades convey the sober elegance of Apennine centres. Because of the earthquake of 2016 some monuments are still under restoration, but the atmosphere of the village preserves intact its charm and its dignity. All around extends the Monti Sibillini National Park, with its peaks, valleys, lakes and trails: from Visso one easily reaches excursion destinations of great beauty such as Monte Bove and the sources of the Nera, which rises in this very territory among rocks and woods. The landscape changes with the seasons, from the flowering meadows of spring to the vivid colours of autumn, to the snowy silence of winter. Nearby open broad pastures and beech woods populated by flocks and birds of prey, while clear waters flow among the rocks. The territory is ideal for trekking, mountain biking, the observation of Apennine wildlife and slow tourism, in an environment of unspoilt nature where hermitages, ancient villages and panoramas of rare charm coexist, able to give the visitor a deep sense of quiet and authenticity.

What to eat

The cuisine of Visso is the authentic fare of the Sibillini mountains, tied to sheep-farming and to highland products. Among the first courses one enjoys tagliatelle, passatelli, vincisgrassi and tagliolini dressed with ragù or with truffle, which the woods of the area yield in several varieties over the course of the year. Not to be missed are the local cured meats, first of all the spreadable ciauscolo IGP, and the sheep's cheeses of the Sibillini, of intense flavour and tied to the ancient tradition of transhumance. Queen of the table is the trout from the clear Apennine watercourses, together with roast meats, game and dishes of mushrooms, chestnuts and pulses, among them the prized mountain lentils. Wood-fired bread, honey and the wild herbs gathered in the meadows complete a genuine larder, the fruit of a territory that has made simplicity and quality its hallmark. The long cold seasons have handed down a hearty and skilful cuisine, able to make the most of every product of the land and of livestock rearing. Giving character to the dishes are the wines of the Macerata hinterland. Among the desserts there is no shortage of crostate, ciambelloni and biscuits of country tradition, often prepared for feast days. The village food fairs, tied to seasonal flavours and to festivities, offer the chance to discover these typical products in the farmhouse restaurants and trattorias of the mountain, in a warm and convivial atmosphere that reflects the sincere hospitality of the Sibillini people.
